This African queens shaped African history. Throughout history, there have been countless examples of powerful and influential women who have fought for their communities and their beliefs. In Africa, these women have often been warrior queens, leading their armies into battle and defending their lands against invaders. In this video,in no particular order, we will be exploring the stories of 14 of the
most remarkable African warrior queens, who have left their mark on history through their
bravery, intelligence, and leadership.
Number 14 on our list we have:
#14 Queen Nzinga Mbade of Angola.
Queen Nzinga was a 17th-century queen of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms, which
were located in modern-day Angola. She is known for her resistance to Portuguese
colonization and her efforts to defend her kingdom from European powers. Queen Nzinga
is remembered as a skilled diplomat and military strategist, and she is celebrated as a hero
in Angola for her efforts to maintain the independence and sovereignty of her kingdom.
At number 13 we have:
#13 Queen Idia of Benin
Queen Idia was the mother of Esigie, the Oba (king) of the Kingdom of Benin in present-day
Nigeria. She is known for her role in helping her son gain the throne and for her political
and military leadership during his reign. Queen Idia is remembered as a powerful and
influential figure in Benin history, and she is celebrated for her intelligence, strength, and
courage. In modern times, she has become a symbol of female empowerment and cultural
pride in Nigeria.
Number 12 we have:
#12 Hatshepsut of Ancient Egypt
Hatshepsut was a Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt who ruled from 1478 to 1458 BC. She is
considered one of the most successful pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, and she is known for
her many accomplishments, including building projects, expeditions to the land of Punt, and
establishing trade routes. Hatshepsut is also remembered for her strong and confident
leadership style, as well as her contributions to the arts and literature of Ancient Egypt.
She was the first woman to hold the title of Pharaoh, and she is considered a pioneering
figure in the history of women in leadership roles.
11 we have:
#11 Queen Pokou of Ashanti
Queen Pokou was the leader of the Ashanti people in present-day Ghana during the 18th
century. She is remembered as a powerful and influential figure in Ashanti history, and she
is celebrated for her role in uniting the Ashanti people and leading them in their resistance
against European colonization. According to legend, Queen Pokou is said to have led her
people on a long and difficult journey in search of a new home, during which they
encountered many challenges and hardships. Despite these challenges, she is said to have
remained strong and determined, and to have ultimately led her people to a new and
prosperous home. Queen Pokou is remembered as a symbol of strength, courage, and
leadership in Ghana.
Number 10 on our list we have
#10: Kandake, Empress of Ethiopia
“Kandake” meaning “great woman,” was used as a dynastic name for the Queens of Moreo,
the capital of Kush (Ethiopia). Many African female warriors ruled Ethiopia. Some ruled with
their husbands while others ruled in their own right.
Historians claim women mainly ruled Moreo. Among them was a Candace that ruled in
332BC.
