Which way should you go…North or South on the Jungle Trail?

If you choose to head North of 510, which is the longer stretch, you will follow a tree-lined trail that winds through hammock habitat and provides glimpses of the Orchid Island Golf Course. You will eventually reach a canoe launch where you can enjoy the view of the Intracoastal. Continue north along the trail to the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, near the end-point. Head west on the Centennial Trail, a part-paved and part-boardwalk trail leading to a picturesque lookout where you can see the original Pelican Island, home to roosting wood storks, pelicans, egrets, ospreys, roseate spoonbills, just to name a few of the bird species. There are also several hiking trails in the area to explore as well as parking areas and restrooms.

If you choose the trail South of 510, the wide sandy road follows along the Intracoastal providing peaceful views of passing boats and wildlife. There are several beautiful homes and communities that back the trail to the west. Along this trail you will find the Captain Forster Hammock Preserve, picturesque “Old Florida” trails through mature maritime hammock and coastal hammock habitats. There is parking, restrooms and drinking fountains here. Near the south end of the Jungle Trail is the Historic Jones Pier Conservation area which is currently being restored as a museum with artifacts and photos of the Historic Jones Property.
