China plans to construct the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Brahmaputra river in India. The river's Tibetan name is Yarlung Zangbo. Originating in Tibet, the river flows into India through Arunachal Pradesh, a northeastern state that China refers to as "South Tibet" and claims as part of its territory. From Arunachal Pradesh, the Brahmaputra continues into Bangladesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Thus, the river is shared by three countries -- China, India, and Bangladesh. Experts say the dam could generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. However, India and Bangladesh have expressed concerns about the project, fearing it could disrupt the ecological balance and alter the river’s flow and course downstream. In 2022, India had announced its own dam project on the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh. Why is China building the dam? What impact will it have on India-China relations?
