We’ve all heard that old saying, “Less is More,” and in this lesson, I’m going to show you how to start using a simple 3 note scale that you can master in less than 3 days. It has a sound perfect for; melody lines plus it covers Dorian and Mixolydian mode.

Since this 3-note scale, is more like a collection of intervals we’re going to simply refer to it as the, “1, 5, 6 Scale.”

The “1, 5, 6,” Scale (as its name implies) contains just 3 notes. They are the first, third and fifth notes of a key. In the lesson, our root will be “G” with the 5th as “D” and the 6th as “E.” Together they form a note group without a tonality.

To establish this run of intervals on the guitar, we’ll cover it in two different ways. One way will use notes in position and the other will place them along the neck.

Believe it or not, limiting your note options during melodic training and omitting tonality will often gain you creative sounding lines. This occurs due to how the limited limit note choice has us ‘making up’ for the lost notes in other ways.

In fact, practicing with a limited melodic structure will go a long way to helping us branch out to new and different rhythmic and melodic directions.
Overall, everything comes down to our approach with fingering patterns.

The limited scale degrees end up helping us establish both unique scale fingerings and fresh ways of producing rhythmic & melodic grooves across our phrases.
