En Ooru tribal heritage village, Wayanad

En Ooru is a tribal heritage village at Pookode in Wayanad district which showcases the vibrant culture and tradition of tribal communities of the state. A cluster of traditional tribal huts roofed with hay and against the backdrop of towering hills has become a major tourist attraction in the region. Spread over 25 acres on a hillock, the centre gives us a golden opportunity to learn about the heritage and lifestyle of tribespeople.

Managed by tribal communities and with the aim of enhancing their livelihood options, the village hosts cafeterias that serve ethnic dishes and a tribal market. Stalls selling souvenirs, spices and handicrafts of tribal artisans, a warehouse for collecting handicrafts, a felicitation centre and an open-air theatre with a seating capacity for 300 people have been set up in this beautiful campus.

Thanks to En Ooru, the tribespeople now have a permanent marketplace to sell their produce in, and tribal artistes have a platform to showcase their talent and earn a livelihood.

The centre stages tribal art forms, tribal food fest and art fest.

A joint venture of the Departments of Tourism and Scheduled Tribe Development, the village also takes the lead in preserving traditional knowledge on food processing and other related areas, and takes up training in organic farming. The centre has paved the way for creating direct and indirect job opportunities for many people.
