Consumers and cities across the country have invested heavily in e-bikes and other devices that use lithium-ion batteries. But firefighters say they've become a serious risk to public safety with little regulation.

E-bikes and e-scooters have become ubiquitous, from American cities to suburbs.

But they're part of a dangerous trend that can pose hazards in our homes, as lithium ion batteries can lead to fires.

Fires caused by lithium ion batteries can happen fast, and can cause sparks and an explosion after just 20 seconds. The UL Fire Safety Research Institute has been sounding the alarm, most recently through a "public service announcement" video showing just how dangerous an e-scooter fire can be.
