Dr. Williams is a faculty member of the WakeMed Heart Center and the WakeMed Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Williams is a faculty member of the Duke University School of Medicine in the Department of Surgery, Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Williams practices at Duke University Hospital and WakeMed Health and Hospitals Raleigh Campus, HeartCarePlus+.
Dr. Williams specializes in adult cardiac surgery, heart valve surgery, coronary heart surgery and bypass surgery, surgery for thoracic aortic aneurysm, endovascular heart and aorta treatments, structural heart including transcatheter heart valves and minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Williams believes in the mission of providing the world’s best cardiovascular surgical care in his hometown and home state.
Dr. Williams was a highly decorated graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. He was a North Carolina High School 4A state champion in singles and doubles and a National Honor Society Member. He matriculated to Princeton University where he received many awards including the David A. Benjamin Award and the Richard Swinnerton Trophy. He was both the NCAA Eastern Regional Campion and Ivy League Player of the Year in tennis and an Academic All-American before graduating from Princeton with honors in biology. He attended Vanderbilt Medical School with numerous honors prior to being selected for surgical residency at Duke University. He was awarded most outstanding junior resident at Duke in honor of Dr. Glenn Young. He served as chief resident in surgery under Dr. Allan Kirk. He completed a research fellowship including advanced postdoctoral degree at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, serving as Chief Fellow, the first surgeon to do so. He completed fellowship in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Duke under Dr. Thomas D'Amico and Dr. Peter Smith. Dr. Williams scored the 100th percentile in the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in-service examination, the nation's highest mark. He is a member of prestigious honor societies including Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Williams serves on regional and national committees for the advancement of cardiac surgical care.
Dr. Williams is internationally known for cardiovascular clinical research. His research is focused on adult cardiac surgery quality, value, outcomes, and clinical trials. He is a principal investigator for the NIH-sponsored Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network. He has published over 70 major articles including studies published in the most prestigious medical journals: JAMA, Circulation, NEJM, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. As a recognized expert in cardiac surgical research, Dr. Williams is a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings and he has received both government and industry funding. His research has been covered by medical and conventional news outlets nationally and internationally.
