What are prebiotics? Prebiotics are fiber compounds that come from plants, and they increase the growth or activity of beneficial or good bacteria, also known as probiotics, in your digestive system.

The body does not actually digest these fiber compounds, so they are like a fertilizer for the good bacteria located in the intestinal tract.
Early research on prebiotics has shown that it can have several health benefits.

As already mentioned, prebiotics increase good bacteria in the gut, and they can enhance immune responses, improve digestion, help overall digestive function, enhance the bioavailability and absorption of certain minerals, and they may help reduce diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.

Some foods that are high in prebiotics include bananas, onions, garlic, asparagus, and Chicory, which is a perennial flowering plant. When consuming these prebiotic foods, it is recommended to eat them raw, as cooking changes their composition reducing the amount of their prebiotic fiber.

If you must cook them, minimal steaming would be best. Prebiotic supplements are available, as well as combination pre and probiotic supplements.
