The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is now exploring a possible new air defense partner — South Korea’s M-SAM (Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile) system.
After reports that the Philippines is ending its air defense deal with Israel due to Middle East conflicts affecting logistics and cooperation, the M-SAM has emerged as a strong candidate to protect Philippine skies under the Re-Horizon 3 modernization plan.
During the Air and Missile Defense Forum 2025 in South Korea, Air Defense Command Commander Major General Fabian M. Pedregosa inspected the M-SAM booth, analyzing its advanced radar, interceptor missiles, and networked capabilities. The M-SAM, also known as Cheongung II, offers medium-range interception against enemy aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles — with hit-to-kill precision and a reaction time of under ten seconds.
If selected, this system could fill the critical gap in the Philippines’ Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) — combining range, affordability, and interoperability with allies like South Korea and the United States. With a range of 40 to 60 kilometers and altitude coverage up to 20 kilometers, the M-SAM could become the Philippines’ new shield against aerial threats in the West Philippine Sea.
As tensions rise over the South China Sea, and modernization under Re-Horizon 3 accelerates, the M-SAM represents not just a missile system — but a statement of strategic independence and deterrence.
