The word 'opas' is equal to ''pojas'', a piece of long cloth wrapped around the waist. It descends from the word ''opaša'', which means ''to gird on''. Therefore the dancers hold eachother by a girdle or a pojas. Opas originates from the region of Dobrudža (north-east Bulgaria) and is danced both by men and women.
