On the night of September 1, handheld pillars of fire lit up the sky as the ‘Hell Valley Demon Fireworks’ began at Jigokudani (hell valley), a famous tourist attraction in Noboribetsu Onsen-cho in the city of Noboribetsu. Eight-meter-high pillars of fire rose from the Jigokudani Observatory to the delight of approximately 450 tourists. This year, the event will be held every Thursday until October 27.

At 8 p.m., six local volunteers dressed as the guardian deity of the hot spring, Yuki-jin appeared, accompaniment by the sound of drums and gongs. They lined up one by one on the steps of the observatory, and majestically launched the eight-meter-high pillars of fire to ward off the bad luck of the spectators.

“I have been to the hot spring many times, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Demon Fireworks. I was impressed. I hope that many people will come and see Noboribetsu,” said a company employee who enjoyed the dynamic display while visiting from Chiba Prefecture.
