MODERN TWIST ON GRECIAN FOLK AT SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI

Greek born star of London Fashion SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI turned to her roots for inspiration for her latest collection, showing a new take on Grecian tradition for autumn-winter 2004/5, Tuesday.

The London Fashion Week catwalk show is Kokosalaki''''s 11th collection, and included her signature draped and pleated silk jersey dresses.

Flowing bronze skirts were reminiscent of grecian tunics, while pom pom details on long boots or belts picked up on another folk tradition.

Kokosalaki explained she wanted to use her Greek heritage to create something new for Western fashion:

"I just used some silhouettes which are quite new because they haven''''t been used in Western costume..not everything, I''''m saying some. And they are actually maybe from Greek costume but they look really fresh now"

Antique bronze and rich browns featured heavily beside head to toe black - the London based designer explains she wanted an earthy tone:

"For now I didn''''t want to do blue and yellow and green and the sky is beautiful. If I wanted to do this I would have had plants and forests."

Skirts came short and tucked at the front, worn with slinky coats or short, sculpted supple leather jackets. Dresses and tops came with flowing layers of chiffon, while tailored jackets came with lace detail and even fine wool shoulder capes made an appearance, complete with tassells.

Evening wear included a corset-style black waistcoat worn with a long skirt to shape a striking silhouette.

The show won a standing ovation from an audience that included her friend and biggest fan Alexander McQueen. Critics call the colleciton "modern, wearable and surprisingly sexy."

30-year-old Kokosalaki was the winner of the New Generation Designer Award at this year''''s British Style Awards. She has also been commissioned to design outfits for the opening and closing ceremonies of this summer''''s Olympic Games in Athens.
