Copy Trading has become very popular in the crypto space over the last few years. Many people see it as a way to earn some easy money. But the truth is, it's not as simple as that.

One of the problems with copy-trading is you often sit with a lot of unrealised loss.

What most copy-traders do is set no stop-loss and use cross-margin, meaning that each trade uses your whole copy-trading account balance, and a trade won't close unless the trader closes it or the account is liquidated, meaning all the money is lost. That's unlikely to happen due to the low capital used for each trade, but technically it could with that style of trading.

Copytraders are very reluctant to close losing positions since it shows up on their trading record, so they use that strategy with very small capital, to make their trading record look really good, and they basically hope that the trades will end up positive in the long term, so they can close them positive and have a good trading record for people to look at.

That's why if you look at their trading records, it looks like they hardly ever take losses, but if you look at their open positions, they usually have a big list of trades that are currently down a lot.

I've had mixed results with it. In my experience, it's usually not profitable in the short-term, then it becomes somewhat profitable in the mid-term, but long-term, it's not consistent.

An important thing to know is that the traders themselves make more money the more people they have copying them, since they're on commission.

Meaning it's in their best interest to make their trading record look as good as possible in the short-term to attract a lot of copiers, even if it means sitting with a lot of unrealised loss and sacrificing long-term profitability.

They make money regardless of whether you do or not.
