In this video, Captain Pedro covers the details for the US Inland Navigation Rule 9 which focusses on navigating in narrow channels or fairways. This US inland navigation rule covers all of the different scenarios when navigating in channels or fairways.

Whether you are studying for your captain’s license exam or want to further your boating safety knowledge, this video will cover all the details and give you examples so you fully understand the US Inland Navigation Rule 9.

Captain Pedro created this series to provide additional clarity to the many people studying on elearning classes or computer-based learning modules or blended learning courses that are studying to obtain their captain’s license.

The inland navigation rules of the road were created as a supplemental addition to the COLREGS International rules of the road. These inland rules focus on United States inland waters with the primary goal in mind to create safety among the water and ensure collision avoidance by establishing clear and concise collision regulations.

The videos in this series will cover the rules that have differences between the international rules and the inland rules.

If you haven’t already done so, we would highly encourage you to go through the material in our “Navigation Rules Of The Road” series where Captain Pedro goes through each of the COLREGS Rules OF The Road and explain what they mean, why they are important along with very useful mnemonic phrases and tips to help you remember the Navigational Rules Of The Road content and prepare you for your captains license test and a wider knowledge of maritime safety.

If you are wondering what COLREGS stands for, it is the Convention On The International Regulations For Preventing Collisions At Sea. When obtaining your Captain’s License, you will be required to learn all the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. Collision avoidance is an especially important subject when you are engaged in navigation at sea. These ship collision regulations were updated in 1972 and are still in effect internationally as collision regulations.

Now you might be thinking that you will never need these are you don’t plan on being the captain of a ship but the reality is that we are all involved in these conditions while boating and fishing and might not even realize it. If it makes it easier for you, think of the ship collision regulations as boat collision regulations.
