Описание к видео Unexplained: How the Nazis created Fanta

What is your favorite soft drink? Well, Fanta is most certainly one of the most beloved drinks in the entire world. During the peak of the “Third Reich”, a new orange soda was created. Coca-cola the world-renowned American multinational beverage brand created the beloved soft drink ‘Fanta’ amid the shadows of World War II in Nazi Germany itself. This new orange soft drink made sure that the Coca-Cola brand’s popularity continued to grow. Fanta became a symbol of nationalist pride and it most certainly became Nazi Germany’s signature soft drink. Everyone in Nazi Germany was addicted to this beverage from the general public to the highest Nazi officials, everyone was drinking Fanta- the orange soda! However, Fanta came out as an alternative for everyone’s favorite Coca-Cola in 1940 due to trade sanctions that were imposed on American companies which affected the availability of Coca-cola ingredients in Nazi Germany, and since then Fanta has been a fan favorite!

Origins of Fanta- The orange soda

Throughout the time of the second world war, the United States of America posted a trade sanction on Nazi Germany. This made the export of the products required to make Coca-Cola extremely difficult. To prevent the lack of drinks in Nazi Germany and to prevent a loss for Coca-cola Deutschland, a man named Max Keith the chief of the Coca-Cola Deutschland decided to make another new product exclusively for the German market. The one specific thing which was best about this product was that it was being made with ingredients that were easily available only in Nazi Germany at the time, including products like whey which was a cheese byproduct, sugar beet, and the remains of apples. Max Keith called the ingredients of this drink “the leftovers of the leftovers”.

The name ‘Fanta’ was decided after a lot of brainstorming which Max Keith and his team did for a long period. After much effort and rigorous use of their imaginations, one of Max Keith’s salesmen named Joe Knipp responded with “Fanta!”.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the United States of America officially decided to enter the war against Japan, Germany, and Italy, the German business unit of Coca-Cola was cut off from the Coca-cola company. After the end of the second World War, the Coca-Cola company got back control of the German plant, the formula of the new drinks, as well as the trademark of their newest product, called the ‘Fanta’ along with the profits that the German business unit made during the entire war.

Just in the year 1943, more than 3 million cases of the beverage Fanta were sold in Nazi Germany! People not just used to enjoy Fanta as a beverage, but many even used Fanta as an ingredient fit for their cooking at times when they needed to add sweetness and flavor to soups and stews, as sugar was provided to people in only fixed quantities.
