Photography 180 | Ep 23 | Apertures Affect on Sharpness & Depth of Field

Описание к видео Photography 180 | Ep 23 | Apertures Affect on Sharpness & Depth of Field

In this week's episode, the focus is on apertures affect on sharpness and depth of field, specifically when photographing wedding day details such as the wedding rings using a Macro Lens. For these images, we used a combination of the Sony A9 and the Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro lens.

As you will see in this exercise, whenever you are photographing details of any kind and you are shooting at an angle that places one part of the detail closer to the camera than the rest of it, you will have to make a decision regarding aperture and how much of that detail that you would like to have "sharp." If you prefer to shoot details at more wide-open apertures, then you will have to live with the fact that you will have varying degrees of sharpness throughout the frame or you must alter your style of shooting/composition to put yourself in a better position to execute tack-sharp details shots.

There are many factors that can contribute to how much depth of field you will have but two of the main factors are distance to camera and focal length. This means that objects that are photographed further from the camera will have a wider depth of field versus objects that are closer to the camera, where depth of field will be shallower. Another factor is Focal Length. Longer focal lengths can produce shallower depths of field, especially at closer distances.

What I recommend is getting in some practice similar to the exercise that I have done here. Create a print out and mess around with distance & aperture and you'll quickly see the effects which should allow you to go into your next shoot with a much better understanding of how to approach your detail shots.
