Fun Fact: There was going to be an American Godzilla film in 1994, two years after Sony acquired the rights from Toho, but due to budget disagreements, it lead to the original director, Jan De Bont, to leave the project on December of 1994. The studio would end up hiring Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to take over the project on a condition that only they discard the original script (which was written by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot and was revised by Don Macpherson in 1995 which would've had an 1996 intended release date) and handle the project however they want. They were complimentary of the original draft, and said it showed them that a film could be made, but concluded that it wasn't the story they wanted to tell. They kept some elements from the original script, but changed most of them. Elliott and Rossio were given story credits in the finished 1998 film, as Emmerich and Devlin insisted they would've never been able to make the film without the original script. De Bont was vocally critical of the final film, blaming Sony for allowing the production to fall so far off course from what he felt Godzilla was really all about. Terry Rossio would later write an essay titled "The One Hundred Million Dollar Mistake," in which he argued that the studio's decision to replace the screenplay he and Ted Elliott worked on with Devlin and Emmerich's completely different vision ultimately doomed the production to fail and potentially cost the studio $100,000,000 in box office revenue it could have otherwise earned. Plenty of concept arts and sculptures were made for the '94 film to which the concepts show how the original team were really willing for their Godzilla to be faithful and honorable to the legacy of the Japanese character but with their own twists of course. One of the concepts also included what could've been the antagonist of the '94 film, Gryphon. Also on Wikizilla, there's a link in the "plot" section where you can actually read the original 1994 script and read the 1995 revised version as well.
