Seminar Abstract

Community revitalization, climate change adaptations, and public health initiatives may be diminished if efforts take place in environmentally compromised spaces. Families living near active and/or legacy extraction or toxic release sites are disproportionately exposed to contaminants of concern and this is unjust. Using an Environmental Justice framework, this session will highlight community science design practices , selected environmental monitoring results, and data sharing strategies. Defined broadly, community science can challenge and change inequity and mistrust in science, particularly when the effort reflects the diversity of publics and does not reinforce existing inequities in science, environmental decision-making, and society. When community science programs are designed in an equitable and action-oriented manner, they can inform community practices, exposure assessments, and intervention/prevention strategies, thus increasing environmental health literacy and movement towards structural change.
