Making a fire hardened selfbow from living, green, rocky mountain maple in just 24 hours. You may have been told that bow wood needs to be seasoned for a long time before you can carve a bow, or else it will crack! In this video, I show you how easily certain woods can be quickly made into durable, long lasting hunting bows with no need for seasoning for months or years. I only use 3 tools in this process too, no workshop required. This process can be done in a single day with force drying, and even better arrow speed and draw weight can be achieved through fire harding. There is evidence that these processes were done historically among many Native American groups. This makes a lot of sense because it allows for easier carving with stone tools, quicker turn around time to have a new hunting bow, and provides much longer lasting weapons than seasoned wood alone. Wood generally carves easier when it’s green, and fire hardening not only makes a bow much faster, but helps it perform better in wet conditions. Making bows this way has made bow building much more fun (and less intimidating) for me, and it will for you too!
