There are many important stability aspects as mentioned below

1) Over turning of a building element or the entire building. This can be due to the condition of the building like its narrow base with that creates uplift or due to the site conditions like a nearby deep excavation near an existing building

2) It can be sliding which is of course rare in a large building but predominant in tall free standing retaining walls

3) It could be a load variation during construction that can create instability in local building members like a simply supported cut lintel.

4) Lack of moment connection or the frame action in the building can result in instability. Proper care needs to be taken to ensure that the building has a lateral shear transfer mechanism

5) Excessive sway and deflection or drift due to wind and earth quake forces also results in instability of the building.

Basically, instability can be attended in different ways. Different instabilities need different structural attention.
a) Attention in scheme of the building: Most of the instabilities can be avoided if we have a robust structural scheme. This comes by good ability to appreciate the structural fundamentals. Some times early appointment of a structural engineer
b) Looking in to the site conditions: This includes looking at the interface of the building early and understand the challenges and corrections needed to overcome the structural challenges. This could be looking at the level differences or the foundations of the existing structure and its adequacy and levels to ensure that the new building that we might build will not create an issue to the existing building or to the new building.
