Disabling background audio in Waze is useful when you prefer a quieter driving experience or want to avoid interference with music, podcasts, or other media. Waze often plays voice guidance and alert sounds during navigation, but you have control over how much sound the app produces—or whether it produces any sound at all.

To disable background audio, open the Waze app and tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) located in the top-left corner of the screen. This will bring up the main menu. From there, tap on 'Settings' to access your app preferences. In the Settings menu, find and select the 'Voice & Sound' option.

Under 'Voice & Sound,' you’ll see a few key controls. The most important for background audio is the 'Sounds' section near the top. You can choose to turn sounds completely off, which disables both voice guidance and other in-app audio. Alternatively, if you still want important alerts but no voice navigation, select the 'Alerts only' option. This is a good compromise if you want to stay informed about traffic hazards without full audio guidance.

Below that, there’s a separate control for 'Guidance volume'—this allows you to adjust how loud or soft the voice directions are if you keep them enabled. Sliding this down to the lowest setting essentially silences the voice without changing other audio preferences.

Keep in mind that disabling background audio won’t stop Waze from working in the background if you're using other apps simultaneously, but it will mute Waze’s own sound output unless re-enabled.
