Episode 7
Namaste, Greetings from Shirish and Pooja.
Welcome to the New Episode of ‪@RedSoilStories‬
A story of Rare Spadefish made traditionally in Kokani style..

Pooja had gone to the market today to get some fishes for the lunch. To her surprise she got a "Rare Spadefish" which she bought instantly and brought home. A "Spade fish" is a rare catch in the monsoon season. It is a salt water fish but often cached in back waters/creek. It is said that one can get this fish when the back water/creek's water turns blackish due to monsoon rain.
It is called as "Kalundar" or "Hotya Masa" or "Patgoor" in local languages.
The fish is often eaten by making "Gravy" or "Fish Curry" ( Mashyacha Tikhla) and also it is fried.
Pooja decided to prepare both the dishes for today's lunch.
For marinating the "Spadefish" she added another indigenous and rare fruit's extract called "Kokum" ( Garcinia Indica ). "Kokum extract" ( Kokum aagal ) is often added in the fish preparations in "Kokan" region of "Maharashtra".
"Kokum" is a sour fruit which adds the flavor to the fish and also removes strong odor of fish. Kokum is also used to make syrup out of it which is used to prepare a sour and sweet drink called "Kokum Sarbat" which is widely enjoyed in many parts of Maharshtra.
For frying the Spadefish Pooja coated the fish in Semolina-Rice flour mixture and shallow fried the pieces till they get golden brown in color garnished with Curry leaves.
I was starving and rushed to Pooja to ask her weather the lunch was ready, she got irritated and I enjoy to irritate her more. :D
After the fried fish she Prepared a simple yet flavorful "Fish Curry" ( Mashyacha Tikla ). It is a widely prepared fish curry/gravy which include Coconut-Red chili-Coriander seeds-Sichuan pepper-Onion-Garlic paste, some Onion and tomato and an Important ingredient "Kokum".
The fish fry and Curry/Gravy is often eaten with rice. We did the same and enjoyed our Lunch together. Meanwhile Raja (pet cat) also joined us in the lunch and he enjoyed the "Spadefish" as he was seen sleeping for hours after the lunch. :D
