Many people ask what do I look for in a good caregiver? I have been selecting caregivers for over seven years, and one thing I know is that this is a people business. The caregiver needs to have the proper training and techniques, so they don't injure themself, but even more importantly, they need to be able to use empathy.

When I interview candidates, I ask specific questions like, "What was your proudest accomplishment as a caregiver," "What do you love about being a caregiver," and "How did you get started in this field." Many people answer these questions with themselves as the focus. They say things like, "I wanted to find a job I was good at." This answer has them at the center, not the client.

I am typically looking for an answer that shows empathy for the client. An example of a response from someone who has empathy may sound like this, "I love the smile on someone's face when I do a little thing to surprise them." Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else shoes and see the world through their point of view. It often gets confused with sympathy. Sympathy, however, means feeling sorry for someone. Empathy is the key to service.

Caregivers, health professionals, doctors, and administrators with high empathy are the best at what they do. So every time I interview, I am focused on the caregiver's empathy. Many of them have been through this as family caregivers. How else can you really feel what it is like?
