How to Rekey Kwikset 660 Deadbolt: A Comprehensive Tutorial

In this video, Mr. Locksmith demonstrates a detailed process for rekeying the popular Kwikset 660 lock. The video covers all stages of rekeying, from removing the cylinder and the C-clip, through identifying the pins, to assembling the lock back again after rekeying. Besides the practical process, this video also provides valuable insights into lock mechanisms, including the function of different types of pins, the role of springs, and the concept of construction master.

The Kwikset 660 deadbolt lock is known for its popularity and widespread use. Although it lacks smart key technology, it is commonly seen in homes across the US and in various countries, particularly in South America, the Philippines, and Canada. It is also referred to as a Grade 1 lock in certain regions.

Disassembling the Lock
To begin the rekeying process, you will need to disassemble the lock. Start by loosening the two screws that hold the lock in place. You can leave the bolt in the door as you remove the cylinder by carefully sliding it out. The cylinder is secured with a small C-clip, which can be easily dislodged with the help of a pick tool.

Once you have removed the cylinder, it's time to identify the keyway and tailpiece. In this case, we will be using the Kwikset KW1 key.

Before we dive into rekeying, it's important to familiarize ourselves with the various parts of the lock. The top part, where the springs are located, is called the Bible. The central component is the plug, and the keyway or profile helps guide the key.

Using the lab kit, we can now proceed to rekey the lock. Start by inserting the top pins back into their respective chambers. By working from the middle of the lock, you can easily place the pins back into position. Ensure that you hold the pins with tweezers and push them in until they are flush with the plug.

With the top pins securely in place, it's time to install the bottom pins. These pins have a flat side that contacts the driver and a rounded side that enables smooth key insertion. Place the rounded side of the bottom pins facing downward and carefully insert them into their designated chambers. Don't forget to add the springs as well.

Before reassembling the lock, it's essential to double-check the keying. In our case, we used a factory key, but you can also cut the keys by code.

Now that the rekeying process is complete, it's time to put the lock back together. Begin by placing the key in the plug and aligning it at a 45-degree angle. Insert the plug into the cylinder and ensure it is securely in place. Avoid pulling the key out abruptly to prevent dislodging any components.

To complete the rekeying process, install the deadbolt tailpiece. Make sure to reattach any clips or accessories that were removed during disassembly.
