Описание к видео DIY Climate Change Experiment

Script:
Hey everybody!
My name is Robert, and today I’ve got a fun experiment for you to try at home!

Together we’re going to try and answer the question “Does carbon dioxide contribute to climate change?” But first, before we can get to the experiment, we need to break the question down a bit so we can better understand what we’re doing.

What is carbon dioxide?
It is a gas that is released whenever anything is burned and large amounts are released when substances like coal and oil are used.

Next what is climate change?
Climate change, according to scientists, is the unnatural warming of the Earth due to these gases that humans are releasing, namely carbon dioxide. They say that these gases act like a blanket, trapping heat in the atmosphere.

So really we are testing if carbon dioxide has this insulating or warming effect that scientists claim.

Now that we better understand the question we can get down to the experiment. You’re going to need three clear plastic bins, three thermometers, plastic wrap, tape, gloves, dry ice, and a hammer to break up the dry ice.

In case you were wondering, dry ice is frozen (or solid) carbon dioxide. And you can find it in most grocery stores or actually ice cream shops.

In the first bin you’re going to place a thermometer inside, cover the top with plastic wrap. Seal it with tape to make it air-tight. This bin will have no added carbon dioxide.

For the second bin, place two medium sized chunks of dry ice. Now, dry ice is extremely cold, it can damage your skin. So always be sure to wear gloves when you’re handling it and have adult supervision. Also the dry ice might be too large when you first get it and you may need to break it into smaller chunks with a hammer. Add in a thermometer, then seal it like the first bin.

In the third bin, put four or five chunks of dry ice inside. Place in a thermometer inside and seal it up like the last two. Now would be a good time to label all three of these bins because once the dry ice dissipates the bins will look nearly identical. Now set these bins aside so you can let the dry ice dissipate.

So why didn’t we put any carbon dioxide in the first bin?
Well, every experiment needs a “control”, something to compare your results against. We need to test if the carbon dioxide is what actually caused the temperature change or if the temperature would change the exact same way without any carbon dioxide present.

Once the dry ice has all melted and the temperatures of the bins are equal we are now ready to conduct the test! Record the starting temperature. Place them all outside in direct sunlight and record the temperature every minute for ten minutes.

Now, once you have your results, research a bit more about climate change and find some ways that you and your family can reduce their carbon dioxide output. Present these solutions to your parents!

Thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed.
