The bonus room renovation is complete! How did it turn out?

This project has dragged on for quite some time here at the SSL Homestead, 6 months long to be exact! I have been working on it in my spare time since February and finally completed it in July! Although this could be done in about 1-2 weeks for the average handyman, well, things like this seem to take me a bit longer. Life is life and at times priorities change and things come up. Although we are now selling our home my oldest daughter is very happy in her new room for the time being.

Each step in this process has been outlined in other articles/videos so I won't go into too much detail but here is a list of the related posts-


My favorite part of this room is by far the flooring, we love this plywood floor! It feels like you are walking into an old farmhouse with brand new flooring, it is solid, and a lot more durable than we could have hoped.

The closets are my next favorite; the motion sensing light switches are just plain cool. With the daybed in between there is plenty of room for guest or for the kids to have sleepovers with their sisters or friends. We couldn't be happier with how it all turned out.

The bonus to this bonus room renovation is that it actually added quite a bit of value and sales appeal when we sold our home recently. Since it now has closets it is considered a full bedroom so instead of three we now have four full bedrooms.

Even though the total cost of this renovation was probably just over $1000 it added about $10,000 in value to the home so we made out just fine:)

I know in this area there are a lot of homes with these bonus rooms above the garage. If you have one in your home I would highly recommend a renovation such as this.
