Since October 2021, the Aggertalhöhle Ründeroth has been equipped with a new lighting system from the company Cave Lighting CL GmbH & Co KG. The installation of this lighting system was part of a project for the general renovation of the Aggertal Cave Ründeroth by the municipality of Engelskirchen, which was funded by the state. This project also included a thorough cleaning of the cave walls and a renovation of the guide paths.
The general renovation of the cave took place between July and October 2021 while the guided tours were still in operation, which was of course a constant challenge for the design of the guided tours during this period. But as a team of cave guides, we also used this time to put together all that was uncovered by cleaning the cave walls into a newly designed guided tour.
When visitors enter the Aggertal Cave, they also enter a walk-in history book of the Earth's history. They learn that earth history is by no means dull, but as exciting as a good detective story or an episode from a forensics series on television. We can take visitors on a journey through time to the coral reef communities in the sea of the upper Middle Devonian. Several places with harness and also the front wall of the main passage show the traces of the enormous forces that once unfolded a mountain range and make them tangible for the guests. We can trace the processes of cave formation together with the visitors and make the shaping power of water recognisable.
All this is made possible by the new cave lighting, with which it is now also possible to switch on groups of lamps step by step. The cave lighting not only puts all the things to see and discover in the cave in the right light, it also supports the presentation in the guided tour. Many things that remained invisible under the old lighting are now visible and can be presented. We cave guides enjoy guiding our guests through what is actually a new cave. The highlight of every guided tour is, of course, the light show, which provides the common thread for the tour, as it were, and sums it up at the end in an impressive presentation, a journey in light and music.
It is certainly not only the new cave lighting, which has to get around first, but also the wind hole discovered in 2019 and of course the cave trail, which also leads past the Aggertal Cave, that have led to us being able to record a record number of visitors in the Aggertal Cave in the 2022 season. For the first time since I took over the management of the guide operation, the magic mark of 25% more visitors was cracked. A total of 5,291 visitors visited the cave in the 2022 season.
Somehow the high number of visitors was already in the air, because hardly a weekend went by when the cave box office wasn't buzzing and queues formed. We had never seen anything like it. So it was no wonder that the cave guides' socks were smoking in the evening. In order to cope with the rush of visitors, we sometimes even had to stagger our tours with two guides.
But this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the visitors. We received a lot of compliments and positive feedback for the beautifully renovated cave and the cave lighting, which we can only pass on. We as cave guides only use the lighting to present the cave. But we are happy every time that we can do this with the new lighting system. All the positive feedback from our guests can actually be summed up very aptly by the following quote: "Before, you had light in the cave. Now you have lighting." This quote came from guests who had already seen the cave under the old lighting system. There is no better way to put it.
It was a super caving season to look back on and we are proud of the good work that Cave Lighting CL GmbH & Co KG did with the new cave lighting and Voigt GmbH with the cleaning of the cave walls and the path renovation. All that remains for us is to show as many people as possible all this and take them on a journey through the history of the earth for 45 minutes.
