Описание к видео The Greatest Inspirational Speech of John Lewis: Icon of Civil Rights, Equality & Democracy (2020)

This video of John Lewis addressing the Caltech graduating class on June 15th, 2018 is regarded by many to be one of the greatest inspirational speeches he ever gave. Given during a tumultuous time in our country's history, Mr. Lewis was still vibrant and full of life. John Lewis was a Civil Rights Icon and a warrior of nonviolent peaceful protests. He has spent his life fighting for equality and democracy both here in America and abroad.

HISTORY OF JOHN LEWIS
John Lewis (nicknamed the “conscience of the congress”) was born on February 21, 1940, in Troy, Alabama. He was the third of ten children and his parents were sharecroppers in rural Pike County, Alabama.

As John grew older he started taking trips into town with his family, where they experienced racism and segregation. Lewis had relatives living in northern cities and he learned from them that the North had been integrated with blacks and whites sharing schools, buses, and businesses.

At age 11, an uncle brought Lewis with him on a trip to Buffalo, New York which opened his eyes about how segregated his home town was.

In 1955, Lewis heard Martin Luther King Jr. on the radio for the first time and he closely followed King’s Montgomery bus boycott later in the year. At 17, Lewis met Rosa Parks and by 18 he met Martin Luther King Jr. himself. By this time his path was clear. He would join the civil rights movement and fight for equality through nonviolent means.

By the time of his passing in July 2020, John Lewis accumulated more than 50 honorary degrees.

Until his passing John Lewis was a pivotal leader in the civil rights movement. His messages of peace, love, justice, equality and democracy have inspired generations of people in America and around the world.

John Lewis will be deeply missed and his legacy will live on.
