Will ‘Chakma-Hajong’ Refugees From Arunachal Relocate To Assam? Kiren Rijiju Issues Clarification

There is a political stir in Northeast India after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s latest statement. Mr. Rijiju commented on a community called ‘Chakma Hajong’. Kiren Rijiju had said regarding the relocation of ‘Chakma Hajong’ from Arunachal Pradesh to Assam through the CAA. Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has dismissed Rijiju’s statement. Sarma asserted that the Government of India had not engaged in any such discussions with Assam authorities. However, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju later issued a clarification that his statement on the relocation of Chakma-Hajong refugees from Arunachal Pradesh has been “misinterpreted” with an aim to “tarnish the image” of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Kiren Rijiju further clarified that ‘he had said that we need to explore alternative for relocating Chakma-Hajong from Arunachal Pradesh to other states, because according to CAA, Chakma-Hajong cannot get permanent resident certificates for citizenship in Arunachal Pradesh.’ Kiren Rijiju clarified that he never said all Chakma-Hajong refugees should be settled in Assam only.
