Maaram - Kadlaw Ta
(“Let us be Entertained”)

Theatre scholars Doreen G. Fernandez and Nicanor G. Tiongson tackled the komedya, also known as the moro-moro, as a legacy of a colonial past and as it continued to thrive in most Tagalog towns. In Antique, the komedya is well and alive in the some barangays in the towns of La-uan, Bugasong, and Barbaza. But in the the towns of Sibalom and San Jose de Buenavista, the komedya is but a fragment of the people’s collective memory. Traditionally viewed as a panata, the komedya has evolved as a form of livelihood for some troupes, and as a performance rendered to assume the more nuanced elements of contemporary theatre. While Antique has been loosely referred to as the komedya capital of the Philippines, the provenance of the tradition as it unravels in Antique deserves a much comprehensive and deeper research.
