The 12054 / 12053 Amritsar–Haridwar Jan Shatabdi Express is a Superfast Express train belonging to Indian Railways – Northern Railway zone that runs between Amritsar Junction and Haridwar Junction in India, serving the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand.

Haridwar railway station (Station code: HW), is one of the major railway stations in Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, India. It falls under the Moradabad division of the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways.Haridwar was first connected with railways, via Laksar, through branch line in 1886, when the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway line was extended through Roorkee to Saharanpur Junction, this was later extended to Dehradun in 1906.The station is situated on the Laksar–Dehradun railway line for connecting Delhi, Howrah and rest of India. One of the main railheads of the Northern Railway zone, Haridwar Junction railway station is connected by broad-gauge lines. The station is situated on the NH 58 in the Devpura locality of Haridwar. The nearby station of Rishikesh is connected to Haridwar on a branch line. Towards west, the major railhead is at Saharanpur (76 km) and going north, the major railhead is at Dehradun (52 km).
The city is situated on the right bank of the Ganges river, at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges. Haridwar is regarded as a holy place for Hindus, hosting important religious events and serving as a gateway to several prominent places of worship. Most significant of the events is the Kumbha Mela, which is celebrated every 12 years in Haridwar. During the Haridwar Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate in Haridwar to perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the Ganges to wash away their sins to attain moksha.
According to Puranic legend, Haridwar, along with Ujjain, Nashik and Prayagraj (Allahabad), is one of four sites where drops of amrita,the elixir of immortality, accidentally spilled over from a kumbha (pitcher) while being carried by the celestial bird Garuda during the samudra manthan, or churning of the ocean of milk. Brahma Kund, the spot where the amrita fell, is located at Har ki Pauri (literally, "footsteps of the Lord") and is considered to be the most sacred ghat of Haridwar.It is also the primary centre of the Kanwar pilgrimage, in which millions of participants gather sacred water from the Ganges and carry it across hundreds of miles to dispense as offerings in Shiva shrines.

While one has generally grown up learning that the first train journey in India happened between Mumbai and Thane in 1853, it is now generally accepted that it was actually in 1851. The first commercial railway run in India actually came on December 22, 1851. The journey was from Roorkee, now in Uttarakhand, to Piran Kaliyar, about ten kilometres away.
The locomotive steam engine itself is said to have been "a small but compact machine, with both engine and tender on one frame and to be able to draw 200 tons on the level at four miles per hour".
The first run of the train happened on December 22, 1851. Two bogies had been initially attached to the engine and had the capacity to carry between 180 and 200 tonnes of material. The distance covered was about two and a half miles covered in 38 minutes at about four miles an hour, the book said. The engine itself was functional for about nine months before it caught fire in 1852.
