Kiruna 2 - daytime

Kiruna is a remote town in Swedish Lapland, primarily existing due to its extensive iron ore mine, one of the largest in the world. The town's economy and infrastructure are deeply tied to the mining industry, with significant connections to Norway and the port of Narvik, where much of the iron ore is exported.

Nestled amidst the vast landscapes of taiga and tundra, Kiruna is isolated, far from other settlements, offering a unique and rugged natural beauty. This location makes it a prime spot for experiencing the wilderness, including activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and viewing the Northern Lights.

Kiruna also endures extreme polar conditions, with the polar night lasting for about half the year, where the sun does not rise above the horizon. This phenomenon, along with the town's commitment to preserving Sámi culture and traditions, adds to its unique charm. Interestingly, due to mining-related ground subsidence, the entire town is in the process of being relocated several kilometers to the east, making it one of the most ambitious urban relocation projects in modern history.


The town is being relocated, including the construction of a new city center, because the iron ore deposits lie directly beneath the current location, and the mine needs access to these areas.
