HMS Royal Oak rested in the calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the quiet hours. At the time, most of the 1,200-man crew rested in their bunks, among them a young sailor. He was barely 18 and far away from his hometown. World War 2 had just begun, and the sailors were just getting accustomed to life aboard a ship.

Suddenly, a faint thud broke the stillness, and the sailor woke, his heart pounding.

As silence returned, he chalked it up to a mechanical glitch. After all, they were in Scapa Flow, the United Kingdom's chief naval base, believed to be unassailable. Moreover, it was the early days of the war, and the thought of a direct attack was unimaginable. Reassured, he went back to sleep.
