If you map Jewish expulsions across medieval Europe, a disturbing pattern emerges: nearly every region expelled Jews at least once, often multiple times. Why did this happen so consistently?
This lecture argues it wasn't random religious hatred but structural design. Christian law forbade charging interest and certain economic activities—but nobility needed these services desperately. Solution: Jews became hereditary economic middlemen, managing estates, providing loans, facilitating trade through diaspora networks. When prosperous, this arrangement worked. When economies collapsed or populations became angry, nobility had built-in scapegoats.
The implicit contract: "You may practice your religion and become wealthy, but when we need someone to blame, you'll be expelled or killed." Jews accepted this terrible deal because it allowed religious survival. This wasn't persecution—it was a renewable resource extraction system where the resource was an entire people.
