Subjects and Verbs
A sentence is a group of words with two main parts: a complete subject and a complete predicate. Together these parts express a complete thought.
I. Subjects.
A subject refers to the person or thing that performs the action of a verb, or is joined to a description by a verb.
There are three types of subjects:
1. Simple subject
A simple subject is the essential noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that cannot be left out of the complete subject.
E.g. - Some flowers will not bloom in the shade.
An old-fashioned spinning wheel sat in the corner of the room.
2. Compound subjects
A compound subject is two or more subjects that have the same verb and are joined by a conjunction such as and or or
E.g. – Snow, ice, and flooding made the roads treacherous.
Either flowers or perfume causes her to sneeze.
3. Complete subjects
A complete subject includes a noun or pronoun that names the person, place, or thing that the sentence is about.
E.g. . - Some flowers will not bloom in the shade.
An old-fashioned spinning wheel sat in the corner of the room.
The man who loves me comes from the USA.
Most of my students living in Phnom Penh work in a bank.

II. Verbs

There are three types of Predicates
1. Simple Predicates
A Simple Predicate is the essential verb or verb phrase that cannot be left out of the complete predicate.
E.g Some flowers will not bloom in the shade.
An old fashioned spinning wheel sat in the corner of the room.
2. Compound Verbs
A compound verb is two or more verbs that have the same subject and are joined by a conjunction such as and or or.
The boys and the girls danced and listened to the records for hours.
Mr. Willis and his neighbors argued and shouted.
3. Complete Predicates
The complete predicate includes a verb or verb phrase that tells something about the complete subject.
Some flowers will not bloom in the shade.
An old fashioned spinning wheel sat in the corner of the room.
The gentle rocking boat lulled us to sleep.
