Spiritual warfare instructs believers to focus on the spirit realm rather than on human agents, teaching that behind every human conflict—such as hatred, manipulation, or intense adversity—are invisible spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12). It shifts the focus from retaliation against people to resisting the demonic influences that manipulate situations.

Here is how spiritual warfare shifts the focus from humans to the spirit realm:
1. Re-identifying the Enemy (Ephesians 6:12)
The foundational premise is that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood". While a person may be the source of pain, they are seen as a "pawn" or an agent being used by, or under the influence of, darkness. The true enemy is defined as "principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places".
2. Shifting Strategies from Retaliation to Intercession
Instead of attacking people, the believer is instructed to fight using spiritual, non-carnal weapons.
Target the Source: The strategy is to command the spirit behind the human action to bow in the name of Jesus rather than attacking the person directly.
Pray for Deliverance: Instead of praying for the destruction of people, believers are instructed to ask God to open their eyes and free them from satanic control.
Love as a Weapon: The goal is to "overcome evil with good," treating people with love while binding the spiritual forces influencing them.
3. Activating "Spiritual Eyesight" and Discernment
Spiritual warfare teaches that the visible, physical world is influenced by an unseen, spiritual realm.
Seeing the Unseen: Believers are encouraged to look past the surface of drama, division, and confusion to see the spiritual forces trying to steal their joy or peace.
Understanding "Schemes": The enemy is understood to have specific "schemes" or battle plans, and Christians are to use discernment to identify these hidden attacks, rather than being tricked by the visible, human component.
4. Utilizing Spiritual Weapons
Because the battle is not physical, it cannot be won with physical, human methods.
Armor of God: Believers must "put on the full armor of God"—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God—to stand against these unseen forces.
Prayer and Fasting: These are essential to "take the battle into the spiritual realm," where God can intervene, rather than trying to win through willpower.
5. Focusing on the Already-Won Victory
Spiritual warfare teaches that Christ has already defeated and disarmed the powers and authorities (Colossians 2:15). Therefore, the focus is not on trying to win, but on standing in the authority of a victory already secured.
