Liu Bang's Defining Gamble: How a Low-Ranking Sheriff Became the Founding Emperor of the Han Dynasty Liu Bang began his career not as a noble, but as a minor law enforcement officer in Pei County during the oppressive Qin Dynasty. The widespread rebellion against the Qin's harsh rule provided his opportunity for advancement. In 206 BC, he successfully led his forces to capture the Qin capital of Xianyang. In a move that earned him immense public support, he spared the city from the customary looting and abolished the cruel Qin legal code, winning popular acclaim.

The fall of the Qin, however, led directly to a new power struggle with another prominent rebel leader, the nobleman Xiang Yu. This brutal conflict, known as the Chu–Han Contention, culminated in 202 BC at the Battle of Gaixia. Liu Bang was victorious, leading to Xiang Yu's suicide and leaving the path to the throne clear. He declared himself Emperor Gaozu, establishing the Han Dynasty and enacting popular reforms like lower taxes.
