Playlist for the series: • Flower, Sun, and Rain | Dual DS/PS2 Playth...
Flower, Sun, and Rain originally released in 2001 in Japan for the PS2. In 2008/2009, the game received an international release for the DS. While the DS port is serviceable, the original PS2 version is generally considered to be the better version, but it only released in Japanese, which I can't read nor speak. When I finally got my hands on the PS2 version (thanks, Bigmanjapan!), I wanted to implement the English script from the DS version while playing the PS2 version. After discarding a few ideas, I had a crazy thought:
Why not just play both versions at the same time?
I’m using one controller with both versions running on emulators, DeSmuMe and PCSX2. As you can imagine, this is an awkward set-up, but it works better than you might think, and good enough for a full playthrough!
Details:
I’m playing both versions in real-time, recording with OBS Classic.
De-syncs are unavoidable. Dialogue does line up, but the vast number of performance/console differences means that I’m constantly working to keep them together. While I’m trying my best to keep them consistent, I’m not aiming for perfection as that’s impossible.
I’m using an 8BitDo SN30 Pro to control both games. Movement is mapped to the D-Pad. Fortunately, I can use the analogue stick on PS2 and the touch screen on DS to adjust movement separately when things start drifting a bit. In general, you'll see me running against walls/corners constantly to force them back together.
Because I’m recording two emulators, neither version runs perfectly. PS2 tends to get these issues more than DS, and PS2 loads slower in general.
There is an emulation glitch on PS2: Katharine obstructs the guidebook when emulating the game. It should look like this screenshot (from real hardware): https://i.imgur.com/iNUZvXi.png
Cutscenes/loads are generally out-of-sync. DS is usually ahead. However, I can cheat in DS by using the toolbar to freeze the game, and I will use this often to better sync cutscenes and loads. In particular, when starting a request, DS is much faster, so pretty much every video will start with this cheat.
PS2 is the main audio source. DS audio is there, but low.
I will show the guidebook puzle solutions side-by-side in every request, but in case those aren't clear enough, here is a screenshot guide: https://imgur.com/a/QzbE90y
I'm looking for version differences, though I’m limited with this format. I’ll show obvious ones, but some can’t be shown easily. I plan on releasing supplemental videos to highlight version differences and other points of interest.
I won't show the DS-exclusive content in the main playthrough, but I will show that content in a later supplemental video.
Here is the version differences guide: https://www.speedrun.com/fsr/guide/m654m
The document will be updated as I go through each request. If you see anything I may have missed, please feel free to bring it up.
Request 00:
As you can expect from the opening request, I spent a lot of time just trying to get used to controlling two games with one controller. I probably spent a good hour practicing in the parking lot alone. Most of the movement here isn't too bad overall. The walk to the hotel is ugly, but there really isn't anything I can do about it.
For convenience, I used 1111 as the birthday.
While recording this request, I had an emulator issue during the music video. Rather than throwing it all away, I re-recorded the music video separately and spliced it in. The splice occurs at the white screen, so it should be seamless. For the most part, every request will be recorded in one sitting, but I will splice if I feel it's absolutely necessary (which won't be often).
There are a ton of version differences, so check out the document: https://www.speedrun.com/fsr/guide/m654m
As crazy as it is, I'm making it work! That said, even though I have a solid process now, it still takes time to practice each request. I'll try to keep a good pace with this project.
Next request (R01): • Flower, Sun, and Rain | Dual DS/PS2 Playth...

Years after finishing this project, I uploaded a full playthrough of the PS2 version with English subtitles taken from the DS version(s). The Dual Playthrough served as the basis for transcribing the script. It can be found here: • Flower, Sun, and Rain (PS2) - Full Playthr...
