Why not give a 5 year old a sharp knife? Or a box of matches? Or let them climb a tree? This 2008 documentary shows a committed and experienced teacher at the Tusseladen Outdoor Preschool in Tromsø, one of Norway's many outdoor kindergartens, as she does all these things and more.

As you see Heidi's expert, gentle-but-tough communication with the infants, as they light fires, use saws, hammers and knives, you may well wonder why we seek to protect our children from such activities, and if it's really helping them. As the film climaxes with them literally climbing a mountain, it seems these tiny, tough 5-year-olds have metaphorically climbed even higher.

Ever since winning Best Youth Programme at the 2009 Northern Character Film Festival, this documentary has been used as an educational tool for children, parents, students and teachers interested or involved in outdoor education. Forest Schools around the world show this film to prospective parents, and it remains a popular resource in teacher training courses around the world, as interest in outdoor education grows.
