I'm retrofitting slides on an old dresser.. You need to separate the slides to install them correctly.
The slides do not have very specific instructions, even online. I figured this way allows you to separate the two tracks from underneath,after installation. Lowes sells these for super cheap,and they are pretty crappy. They are difficult to install and would have tried something else if I knew.
but....5 bux is a great deal,especially if you're buying a whole bunch of them,hope this helps
