The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six main organs of the United Nations (UN) and is responsible for maintaining international peace and security: 
Powers
The UNSC has the power to: 
Establish peacekeeping operations 
Enact international sanctions 
Authorize military action 
Issue resolutions that are binding on member states 
Membership
The UNSC has 15 members, including: 
Five permanent members with veto power: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States 
Ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly 
Leadership
The UNSC's main leadership position is the presidency, which is held by a different member of the Council each month in English alphabetical order. The president presides over meetings and represents the UNSC. 
Role in responding to crises
The UNSC can respond to international crises by: 
Mandating peace talks 
Mandating mediations 
Mandating negotiations 
Mandating meetings 
Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2025-2026, receiving an overwhelming support in the elections held by the UN General Assembly in New York today.
