A team of engineering students of J.C Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, led by Sandhya Yadav, a final year student of Mechanical Engineering, has developed a Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair for the physically challenged people who face difficulty in moving from one place to another in daily life. With the help of hand gesture controlled wheelchairs, physically challenged people can move easily by guiding the wheelchair with their hands.
These days, when a joystick controlled wheelchair is available in the market costing between Rs 80 thousand to Rs 1.5 lakh, the students have aimed to develop a hand gesture wheelchair in an affordable range cost under Rs 50 thousand. The prototype of the wheelchair was demonstrated by the team before the senior faculty members of Mechanical Engineering.
Dean Quality Assurance Prof. Sandeep Grover, Chairperson of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Raj Kumar, Registrar Dr. S.K. Garg and faculty coordinator Dr. Rajeev Saha and Dr. Sanjay Kumar were also present on this occasion.
The team has developed this project titled ‘Madad’ under the Mechatronics Club of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The team explained that the wheelchair has the features of tilt control and motion control on hand gesture.
The team has claimed that this project will help people with disabilities that cannot move from one place to another without any help. They have plans to develop this prototype with more features and applications to make it user-friendly.
