We live in a “therapeutic culture” (Philip Rieff’s phrase) in which everyone is encouraged to talk about their feelings and “being in therapy” has lost any stigma it may have once had. Despite this, we also live in an increasingly angry society and that anger is particularly strong amongst men.

I argue that we shouldn’t be surprised at this situation because, at its core, society is based upon a code of silence – there are things that we know, but, in order for life to continue as normal, we do not talk about. This is particularly true of the violence – both acknowledged and unacknowledged - that underpins our culture. To illustrate this, I use specific examples from the US TV Series – “The Sopranos” (1999-2007) and the Hollywood movie “A Few Good Men” (1992) starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in opposing roles.
