As he pulled into his driveway, he was ambushed by two men in a rented Toyota Prius — Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera — who shot him at close range. Markel died the next day from his wounds. Investigators quickly ruled out robbery and began exploring family motives. The connection led to Katherine Magbanua, Garcia’s former partner and Charlie Adelson’s girlfriend, creating a direct link between the shooters and the Adelson family. Financial records later showed Magbanua being paid through the Adelson family’s dental practice, with Donna Adelson signing the checks. Prosecutors allege this was hush money for her role in arranging the hit. Donna was arrested in 2023 after attempting to flee to Vietnam following her son Charlie’s conviction
