Released on February 4, 1949 from Famous Studios through Paramount Studios distribution to theaters, Hep Cat Symphony was actually considered for an Academy award in 1951 for some reason, but not officially nominated. It showed in theaters for many years, though largely forgotten today.

Hep Cat Symphony was directed by Seymour Kneitel, with animation by David Tendlar and get this: story by Jack Mercer. This cartoon is almost all music and was music directed by Winston Sharples and mainly centered on the classics von Suppé, Franz : "Poet and Peasant Overture " and
Rossini, Gioachino : "William Tell Overture "

Silly, yes, but better thought out than most of the Famous Studios one offs. These two main characters, the mouse conducting the orchestra and the cat would later evolve into Herman and Katnip. There are some very fun parts of this cartoon and I can see why at that time this might be in consideration for that most elusive of all awards in animation! But remember, those awards like most major awards involve politics and lobbying, and that was just not how Famous Studios was set up, thus no award! But a lot in this cartoon was copied by other studios, (and themselves of course) for many years to come!

The hep cat in Tin Can Alley finds the mouse symphony orchestra practicing next door a constant disturbance to his jazzy jive. Dressed as the Pied Piper, he pipes them away, but the mice call the final tune.

This is one of the lesser known Noveltoons and I think this is now one of the better restorations out there of a pretty much lost cartoon. We have markedly improved the sound, clarity and color brightness from anything else we found available, so enjoy this little bit of history, and just enjoy classic cartoons for what they are. It helps nothing to pick apart animation based on todays computer animation, remember every one of the 24 frames per second were actually drawn by hand back then.
