The Black Hole of Calcutta was an incident that took place on June 20, 1756 when British prisoners were held in a small dungeon at Fort William in Calcutta, India:

Prisoners: 146 British prisoners, including two women and several wounded men

Dungeon: A small lock-up measuring 18 ft by 14 ft 10 in with two small windows

Conditions: The prisoners were forced to spend the night in the dungeon, which was hot and humid. They suffered from suffocation, trampled on each other, fought over water, and begged for mercy from the guards

Deaths: The fort's commander, John Zephaniah Holwell, claimed that 123 of the prisoners died. However, historians today estimate that fewer people were imprisoned, and that only 43 died

Aftermath: The East India Company used the story to justify taking over Calcutta, and the expression "like the Black Hole of Calcutta" came to be used to describe any dark and forbidding place
