Teochew music, abbreviated as Chaozhou music, is a traditional music mainly circulating in the Chaoshan area of Guangdong Province, and is one of the intangible cultural heritages at the national level.
Chaozhou music is a general term for all kinds of folk instrumental music in the Chaoshan area, mainly popular in Jieyang, Chaozhou, Shantou and other places, with its influence radiating to southern Fujian, Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia, as well as places in the world where the Chao people live. Chaozhou music is famous at home and abroad for its flexible and varied forms of performance, and is known as ‘the legacy of the Tang and Song dynasties’ and ‘the right sound of China’, and is the treasure of Chinese folk music .
Chaozhou music can be broadly divided into gongs and drums, strings and poems, fine music, temple music and river music. Among them, gongs and drums belong to square music, including Teochew big gongs and drums, Teochew small gongs and drums, and Teochew Su gongs and drums; while strings and poems, fine music, temple music, and river music belong to chamber music. There are about 20 kinds of musical instruments commonly used in Teochew music, and the most local characteristics are the two strings, suona, and deep wave .
