Renal function tests are a set of clinical tests that measure kidney function. Renal function tests (RFTs) are an important test for detecting kidney diseases. Renal function tests are done on both blood and urine. Renal function tests (RFTs) are performed to determine the amount of urea, creatinine, uric acid, electrolytes, minerals, and proteins in the blood. Renal function tests in Pakistan usually include blood urea, uric acid, and creatinine, so this test is sometimes called the urea-creatinine test. 

A blood urea test is an important part of renal function tests (RFTs). Blood urea is a by-product that is produced during protein metabolism in the body. Normally, urea is excreted from the body through the kidneys. When there is a problem in the kidneys, instead of being excreted from the body, urea starts accumulating inside the body, which causes various symptoms. The normal amount of urea in the blood is up to 20; if the amount of urea increases, uremia occurs. Symptoms of high blood urea levels include increased or decreased urine output, severe itching, swelling of the feet, legs, or face (especially around the eyes), unexplained extreme fatigue, and insomnia.
