Nehemiah led Israel in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. It’s a powerful and beautiful picture of the spiritual rebuilding of revival God wants to do in our lives as well.
But there was opposition from without and within. That is the nature of spiritual warfare. You can expect spiritual warfare and spiritual attack whenever you try to do something good and godly in your life. The enemy hates revival.
You can also expect conflicts within. Wherever there are people there will be conflicts. That is also part of life. Nehemiah led in the solving of the conflict between the Jews who were being taken advantage of by those who were wealthy. Conflict is part of human nature, but God raises up leaders with servant hearts and godly wisdom to lead through the conflict and bring peace.
Nehemiah is an example of great leadership. He led them through the troubles and conflicts and brought peace. Exactly right; “If possible, as far as it has to do with you,” Paul wrote, “be at peace with all men.” I’m glad he said ‘if possible’; it means that God understands that some people are impossible.
That brings us to chapter 8. The wall surrounding Jerusalem had been rebuilt, the gates had been set and the doors secured. They stationed guards at all posts and would not open the gates until the sun was hot. They were always on the ready. In other words, be dressed in readiness even after you’re rebuilt your life. Jesus said the same, “Be on the alert and be ready.”
It came about that after the wall was rebuilt and the doors and gates set and guards stationed at the ready, that God put it on the heart of Nehemiah and Ezra to assemble the people. All the people gathered as one man at the main square of the city, and they asked Ezra, the priest, to read to the people the book of the law God had given to Moses.
When the people heard the words which God had given to Israel, their first response was to weep. Nehemiah, Ezra and the other leaders said to the people, “No, do not weep, do not mourn. This day is holy to the Lord, this is a day to rejoice!”
This was an amazing scene. The people’s hearts were broken when they heard what God had done for Israel and saw how they had responded so poorly as a nation. All the tragedies and hardships could be connected directly to their hardness of heart toward the God who loved them and redeemed them and had done so much for them. It broke their heart and made them weep.
But the leaders understood that strength comes from joy. “This is not a day to weep or mourn for what you have lost, it’s a day to rejoice in what you have. For the promises of God are in front of you.
Several years ago I was speaking with someone who was going through a difficult time; so much had been lost. That person said, “I want my life back.” I responded, “You don’t get your life back; you get your life forward.” The path is in front of you; life is in front of you. You can’t undo the past, you can rejoice in what God has in store for you in the future.
The same is true for all of us, we don’t get our life back, we get our life forward. All the promises of God are still true; and all the promises of God are in front of you.
When Israel was destroyed and exiled to Babylon. Imagine how many Jews there in Babylon said, “I want my life back. I want things the way they were.” But God sent the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “When 70 years have been completed in Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.”
In other words, they would stay in Babylon 70 years and then would rebuild their lives in Israel. God would fulfill His good word; good things would come. The promises of God are in front of you.
The journey is in front of us; God has a future and a hope in store for us; it’s forward and not back. You don’t run races backward, you run them forward.
“Do not weep, do not mourn,” Nehemiah and Ezra said to them, ‘this is a day to rejoice, for the joy of the Lord is our strength.”
