Are you a new mama looking for a little spa treatment? Well, what’s more relaxing than a nice warm … sitz bath!?
In this video, I’ll explain what exactly a sitz bath is and why every new mama needs to know how to make one. Hint: it has to do with faster healing!

Before we get going, let’s have a quick German lesson. Sitzen is German for “to sit” and that’s a pretty important detail when it comes to a sitz bath.

That’s because a sitz bath is designed to soak your perineum, and to do that, you sit in a shallow tub of warm water. So simple, right?

For this reason, sitz baths are most often used for fresh postpartum moms who might have tears or stitches, could have hemorrhoids, and definitely are swollen and sore. Sitz baths reduce pain, swelling and inflammation as well as clean your body and promote healing by encouraging blood flow.

So, let’s dive into how to take a sitz bath…

The most common way to do this is pretty straight forward. All you need is a regular ol’ bathtub.
Clean your tub (or better yet, ask someone to do it for you)
Fill the tub with a few inches of warm water
Lay a clean towel on the tub floor
Sit down in bath
And relax for 20 minutes

That’s it! So easy!

Now, to supercharge your healing, you can add some additions to your tub…

For a relaxing and soothing experience, add ½ cup of Epsom salts to your sitz bath

For a cleansing and detoxing experience, add ½ cup of baking soda to your sitz bath

For a healing and restorative experience, add 1 cup of herbal tea to your bath. Pick herbs like marshmallow root, witch hazel bark, chamomile, calendula and lavender.

Now, what do you do if you don’t have access to a bathtub… no problem, we’ve got you covered.

You can use a sitz bath kit, which is a shallow plastic bowl that sits over your toilet. You simple fill with warm water and sit down on the throne with a magazine.

If you are too busy or not a fan of baths, there are also sitz herbal sprays that you apply directly to your perineal area so it’s kinda like a bath in a bottle. Easy and convenient and I would apply after each bathroom visit.

You’ll want to finish your sitz bath off with a little healing ointment if you are feeling extra tender and sore. Several companies sell perineal balms that will do the trick. Or, just apply a little olive oil.

So, there you have it… how to make a sitz bath for ultimate healing and recovery. I hope you do yourself the favor and do one! While there is some footwork involved, they seriously are amazing for a sore mama!
